78.9 miles of riding today starting at Owego, NY at 10:00 A.M. and heading west to Bath, NY arriving at 6:45 P.M. The weather started out nice. In noticed this big golden orb in the sky that I have become unfamiliar with. IT WAS THE SUN! So I headed west on New York Bike Route 17 through hilly areas that rose to my left and my right but not before me as I had only minimal climb today. Feeling good I met up with Carlin in Waverly, NY for lunch at Sister’s Family Restaurant. Delightful. I was well into my cheese burger ( I like the cheeseburgers) while Carlin and I discussed the wonderful turn of events with the weather. Then as I looked up from my plate I noticed IT’S RAINING AGAIN!!! What? Well, it turned out to be but a short soaking. Just as we finished, the rains subsided. Well, for a while. They returned on and off but nothing like the previous days. Only one change of clothes today. I don’t like riding in wet, cold, attire. It makes me feel wet and cold.
Along the way we stopped in Corning, NY to see what the Corning Glass complex looks like. Pretty impressive. In fact, we were told later in the evening by Deacon Dave LaFortune that Corning has the second most PhD’s working for them of any private company in America. IBM being #1. There’s a lot of glass on their buildings. I guess I shouldn’t have expected bricks. On I rode to Bath, NY where we met up with Deacon Dave LaFortune at St. John Vianney Parish. Carlin and I went out to dinner with Dave and his wife, Tricia, in the town of Hammondsport, NY and we’re staying with them tonight. Dave spent time in Catholic education in Chicago many years ago and his wife has been in Catholic education for many years. We had a delightful conversation. I was thankful for Dave’s prayers for the success of this ride and for Marist High School.
Animal encounters today: Two (2) dogs barked at me, on different occasions. I did not bark back. Another dog came close but I think his sensory system picked up the rabies vaccine and he backed off.
Along bike route 17 I saw Notre Dame High School which I have been told is the only Catholic High School in this southern New York rural area.
I rode alone today as I will until Friday of next week. I will survive. See you tomorrow.
